Vettec Introduces New Cartridge System for Bovine Adhesive Materials

160cc cartridge system features break-off cap, reinforced plungers and triple-seal piston

Orange, Calif. – Mar. 20, 2018 – Vettec, a leading manufacturer of hoof care products for more than 20 years, has launched a new cartridge system for its Bovi-Bond™ adhesive products. The new, 160cc cartridge system includes a break-open cap, reinforced plungers and a triple-seal piston. These enhanced features ensure leak-free dispensing and help hoof care professionals increase efficiency by mitigating the need for tools to open the cartridge.

“We designed this new cartridge system based on feedback from Vettec customers. We know that efficiency is key when hoof care professionals are working with their clients. This new cartridge design will help save time and provide an advanced, reliable dispensing system for Bovi-Bond products,” says Anthony Woods, General Manager, Vettec.

The new break-off cap design does not require tools to open the cartridge. This minimizes any potential damage to a cartridge, such as obliquely cutting off the tip or crushing the dual-dispensing channels. In addition, reinforced plungers and triple-seal pistons create a redundant sealing system. The piston features a rubber o-ring with reinforced components to push adhesive forward at a consistent ratio. These features mitigate material from leaking out of the cartridges.

The new cartridge works with the existing accessories including dispensing guns, mix tips and cartridge caps.

Learning the Cartridge Basics

When hoof care professionals invest in Vettec products, it’s important to follow usage guidelines to ensure product is applied correctly, avoid costly errors and maintain the life of the product. To achieve optimal results when applying Bovi-Bond™, it’s important to consider these tips when preparing your cartridges:

·         Remove the outer cap from the cartridge.

·         Open the cartridge by pushing the tip down on a firm surface. Pull up on the cartridge and then backwards to remove the tip.

·         Insert cartridge into the dispensing gun with label side up.

·         Squeeze out a small amount to ensure both sides dispense evenly.

·         Attach a mixing tip by pressing the tip to the gun and twisting clockwise.

·         Apply the material to the claw or to the block.

When finished, maintain pressure on the lever of the dispensing gun. Remove the mixing tip, release the pressure from the lever, and apply the cap. Dealers can supply extra caps if needed.

To keep Bovi-Bond™ materials in good condition, cartridges should be stored properly:

·         Do not leave mixing tip on the cartridge when storing. Apply a cap to maintain the condition of the cartridge.

·         Again, it is crucial to release the pressure from the lever of the dispensing gun after the cap is applied, but before storing.

Vettec products work best when the temperature of the material is between 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit. The outside ambient temperature is not as critical as the temperature of the material itself.

Vettec’s new cartridge works with any Vettec dispensing guns and mix tips. The new design ensures leak-free dispensing and does not require nippers to open the cartridge, which reduces the margin for error. Features of the cartridge include:

·         160cc dual cylinder cartridge

·         Triple seal piston

·         Break-open cap

XL Block

The XL Block is larger than Bovi-Bond's traditional rubber block.  The larger size allows a proper fit for bigger claws.  The XL Block provides more sole coverage than the traditional block and supports both the heel and the toe.  The block can be trimmed to a smaller size if needed.   The block is made from polyurethane and adheres very well to Bovi-Bond while providing superior traction on difficult surfaces.

Using Blocks to Reduce Lameness in Beef and Dairy Cows

Using Blocks to Reduce Lameness in Beef and Dairy Cows

Similar to how humans use crutches to limit the use of an injured foot in order to heal, cows rely on a similar approach called blocking to allow abscesses, claw injuries or other conditions to heal. Blocks are applied to a cow’s healthy claw to elevate the injured one off the ground so that it can heal and avoid lameness.

The dairy industry has adopted this treatment option to help maintain production, avoid downtime and save money, as lame cows can be costly to the industry. When cows become lame and go untreated, they do not produce as much milk. Worse, the condition can escalate to the point that cows can’t walk, stopping milk production altogether. In the beef industry, if cows are lame they don’t gain weight, stay on the feedlot longer and cannot be sent to processing, costing feedlots more money and time. Using blocking in both industries can save resources and increase production.

Benefits of Blocking for Dairy Farms and Feedlots

Cows that are on feedlots or dairy farms can get many different infections or conditions in their claws. Some of these include White Line Disease, ulcers, abscesses, fractures, thin soles, injuries and more. To detect or prevent some of these conditions, it’s important that a hoof care professional checks and trims the cow’s claws regularly in order to maintain healthy claws.

If a cow becomes lame, it’s important to decipher what caused it in order to treat the condition properly. Blocking, however, can help regardless of the injury or condition to keep business moving. Because blocking will elevate the injured claw off the ground, it will heal faster and alleviate pain. This makes the cow more comfortable and, therefore, allows farms and feedlots to maintain optimal production.

There are different tips and techniques hoof care professionals can use on beef and dairy cows to prevent and treat lameness. Some examples include:

  • Both rubber and wood blocks can be utilized on cows. Wood blocks eventually fall off claws naturally, thus eliminating the need to go back to each cow to remove them. Rubber blocks are softer and can be a good alternative for cows with thin soles or sensitive feet, and have to be removed once an injury heals.
  • Depending on the cow’s sole thickness, there are different adhesives that can be used to adhere the blocks on the claws to increase the cow’s comfort level. Vettec adhesives Bovi-Bond and Bovi-Bond Soft re proprietary two-part polyurethane adhesives that can be used to bond wood or rubber blocks. Both have a fast, 30-second set time and strong bond, while Bovi-Bond Soft sets with a softer final hardness that reduces sole bruising.
  • Check and trim the herd’s claws on a regular basis to ensure that the length is healthy and there are no symptoms of potential conditions or injuries.

The feet and claws support a cow’s entire body weight. With this in mind, it’s important that their claws are treated and maintained to produce optimal output for a feedlot or farm. As humans need to heal a broken bone by relieving the injured foot from any weight-bearing activity, cows need the same treatment with blocking to heal and stay healthy. A lame cow affects more than its ability to walk; it affects its overall heath and the business outcomes for the livestock industry. With today’s blocking and adhesive materials, hoof care professionals can help cows and businesses maintain healthy claws and production more than ever before.
